From October 7 to 9, the REWET consortium gathered at the University of Eastern Finland for a three-day meeting. Partners from across Europe gathered to share advances, align on next steps as we head into the final year of the project.
Days 1 & 2: Updates, Reflections & Forward Planning
The first two days were held in conference mode, with each Open Lab (from Finland, The Netherlands, Austria, Estonia, Belgium, Italy, Portugal) presenting on their restoration efforts, monitoring developments, and emerging challenges. We dove into cross-cutting themes including:
- ecosystem services and carbon fluxes
- biodiversity monitoring and indicators
- stakeholder engagement, policy integration, and social dimensions
- data sharing, modelling and synergies across sites
A special highlight: Sanna-Kaisa Rautio from the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment presented on the Priodiversity LIFE Project, illustrating ambitious efforts to halt biodiversity loss in Finland.
The conversations were open, critical and constructive. As we are now just one year away from the project’s conclusion, the urgency and excitement of wrapping up strong were palpable.
Day 3: In the Field at Ylpässuo Open Lab
On the third day, we traded slides for rubber boots and visited the Ylpässuo Open Lab, a Finnish peatland ecosystem rich in ecological insights. Under the crisp autumn sky, participants witnessed peatland restoration in action, and discussed in situ the complexities of hydrology, species recovery, and site-specific challenges. The Finnish autumn colours added extra magic to the immersive experience.
Looking Ahead
With just one year left on the clock, the REWET consortium is full speed ahead. We’ve got restoration tools to deliver, data to integrate, and impact to ensure. Expect more news, outcomes, and insights. Follow us on our social media to stay up to date.
